Rushed planting jobs are a common reason new landscaping fails, so we slow down where it counts. Our crews start with bed layout and soil preparation, loosening compacted ground and conditioning the soil so roots can spread. Plants go in at the correct planting depth with careful root handling, never crammed into a hole that is too tight or set too high or too low. Everything is watered in, then mulched.

Mulch is where a lot of otherwise good work gets ruined. We keep a clean collar around every trunk and stem and never build the piled-up “mulch volcanoes” that trap moisture against bark and invite rot and disease. Depending on the condition of your existing beds, we can either remove tired old mulch or overlay fresh material for a crisp look.

Choosing plants that suit your specific site is half the battle. A bed baking in full afternoon sun near a foundation needs different plants than a shaded, damp corner of the yard, and coastal North Shore properties face salt spray and wind that inland gardens do not. We help you match plant choices to sun exposure, drainage, and how much maintenance you want to take on, so your landscaping looks good without becoming a chore.

Timing matters too. Spring and fall are generally the best windows for planting in Essex & Middlesex Counties, giving roots time to settle before extreme heat or hard frost. Fresh mulch can be installed through most of the growing season, often right after a spring or fall cleanup, and it does double duty, insulating roots through temperature swings while cutting down on weeds and watering. How much mulch is right? Two to three inches over the bed is enough to hold moisture and block weeds, with mulch kept a few inches back from every trunk and stem. Deeper layers, or years of topping up without removing the old layer, starve roots of air, which is why we often remove built-up mulch before adding new. Shredded bark and hardwood mulches knit together and stay put on slopes better than loose nuggets, which float off in a heavy rain.

Some old favorites can no longer be sold. Japanese barberry, burning bush, and Norway maple are on the Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List, which bans their sale, purchase, trade, and propagation in the state, and many North Shore beds are still full of them. When we refresh a bed, we can pull them out and replace them with shrubs that do the same job: winterberry or fothergilla for fall color in place of burning bush, inkberry holly for a low evergreen hedge, and summersweet or Virginia sweetspire for damp spots. Near the water, northern bayberry and native roses stand up to salt spray better than most.

Hedges and screens are their own category.
