Under state law (MGL c.87), a tree in the public way — roughly the strip within 10–15 ft of the street — is a “public shade tree” and needs Tree Warden approval and a public hearing to remove. Trees on your own property usually don’t need a town permit, but near Salem’s wetlands, rivers, or the coast, a property can fall under the Conservation Commission’s buffer, where removals may need review.
